All Digimon come into the Digiworld by hatching from what is callled Digi-Eggs or Digitamas. Digimon do not die under normal circumstances because they are made of reconfigurable data. So when a Digimon becomes of old age or it receives fatal a wound in battle, the Digimon will dissolve into infinitesimal bits of data. Then the data recomposes itself as a Digi-Egg, which will hatch when it is rubbed gently. Digimon who are reincarnated in this way will sometimes retain some or all their memories of their previous life. However, if a Digimon's data is completely destroyed, they will die.

They are able to digivolve by the use of digivices that their human partners have. There are different types and colors of digivices too.

They age via a process called "Digivolution" which changes their appearance and increases their powers. The effect of Digivolution is not permanent though. Digimon who have digivolved will most of the time revert back to their previous form after a battle or if they are too weak to continue. There are many different ways to Digivolve.

In some cases a item such as special Digi-Eggs, Cards, Spirits or crests and tags are needed to help the Digimon digivolve to a higher stage.

Each Digimon has at least 6 stages. Baby into In-Training into Rookie into Champion into Ultamite into Mega.
